18 Moths braved the forecast for the first foiling International Moth Regatta in Austria and the First Act of the Euro Cup. The Union Yacht Club Attersee made the 8 Austrian Boats and 10 Foreign boats very welcome. The event sponsors kindly provided fantastic prizes, food and drink. The competitors that arrived on Thursday for 2 days of pre-regatta training were greeted with 10 knots of wind and sunshine. The stage was set for an epic event.
Then came in the cloud and rain, killing the wind and dampening enthusiasm. Despite the very tricky conditions the race officer managed to get 3 races in on the Saturday. The winds were very light with the occasional gust tempting boats into the air. The tactics of flying fast away from where you want to go or taking the slow shortest course made racing tense. Everyone had moment of frustration and excitement as positions changed as much as the wind.
At the end of the 3 races Fredo held his nerve to consistently contend for the lead and lead. Things finally came together for Niki who sailed fast and well to get a win 2 thirds. Adriano was fast and light helping him into 3rd. Carlo recovered after missing the start of the first race to put in a win and get up into 4th. Martin was fast and flew well but not always towards the next mark.
Due to lack of wind there was no racing on Sunday and so an early end to the regatta with the required 3 races meant the results stood as follows:
There were some very special performances outside the top 5 that need to be mentioned.
The young Valentina sailed a Moth for the first time on the Thursday and then showed us all how easy it was on the Saturday. Despite a ripped trampoline which she repaired after race one she was able to mix it in with the pack showing some of us that 20 years of Moth experience is no substitute for young talent.
Gerold and Anja came all the way from Berlin to be rained on.
Martin kept us all entertained on land and in the bar.
Micheal showed us how to organize a top class Moth event, by putting in a lot of effort for the competitors. A big thank to him, the sponsors and the Union Yacht Club Attersee for a fantastic start (apart from the wind and rain) to the EuroCup.
Next stop: Ascona.
